SM-3 Block IIA

Model: RIM-161D Block IIA

US-Japanese exo-atmospheric hit-to-kill ballistic missile interceptor operated through the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system. Public sources give SM-3 Block IIA a kinematic range of approximately 2,500 km and velocity around 4.5 km/s, but successful engagements depend on ballistic trajectory, altitude, geometry and the wider Aegis sensor network. For simulation purposes the engagement radius is normalized to 500 km and detection to 800 km to prevent the published kinematic range from acting as a universal air-defence bubble. It should primarily engage ballistic missile threats.

Sources and interpretation

The description and simulation values come from the MISSILES platform catalog. Independent specification references and a factual review date have not yet been recorded for this profile. Image credits identify the image source only; they do not verify the simulation values.
